Traditional Prayers for Communion

100 Prayers For Communion To Say Before Taking A Communion

  1. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
  2. Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
  3. We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.
  4. Gracious Father, I thank you for providing this holy meal of bread and wine, representing the body and blood of my Savior, Jesus Christ. I rejoice that You invite me to Your table where You refresh and strengthen me. Prepare my heart to receive this gift of grace as I reflect upon what Jesus has done for me on the cross. Amen.
  5. Lord Jesus Christ, we believe that you are present here with us in the holy sacrament of the altar. We desire earnestly to partake of you in this holy mystery of your body and blood. Since we cannot now receive you at this altar, come spiritually into our hearts. We embrace you and unite ourselves to you. Never let us be separated from you; by your body and blood help us to overcome all our weaknesses. Lord Jesus, may your loving blessing rest on us. Amen.

I repent of my self-centeredness and ask You to be at the center of my life instead. Empower me through Your Spirit to live wholly for You. Amen.
  5. Gracious Savior, I know that I often fall short of being Your faithful disciple. What does communion represent? Also called the Lord’s Supper or Eucharist, communion represents the death of Jesus on the cross to pay the punishment for our sins. The bread symbolizes His body which was broken and wounded, and the cup symbolizes His blood which was poured out so the forgiveness of sins could be poured out to all who believe in Him.

When should you pray before taking communion? It is important for each believer to spend time silently confessing any unrepentant sin and reflecting on the meaning of communion before partaking. This allows the Holy Spirit to prepare your heart properly. Prayers of confession and reflection can begin weeks, days or moments before actually taking communion.

What elements are used in communion? Jesus originally instituted communion with bread and wine. Today many churches substitute grape juice for the wine, but still use small pieces of bread or crackers to retain this important biblical symbolism. The bread represents Jesus’ body broken for us, while the wine or juice represents His blood which was shed to purchase our redemption from sin.

Who should take communion? Communion is for all who have put their trust in Jesus Christ for salvation. If you have asked Him to be your personal Lord and Savior, you should participate. However, each person should examine their own heart and life before taking it to avoid negative impact.

Can you take communion alone? Yes you can. If isolated, sick, or unable to attend church for any reason, you can still read Scripture and reflect on the meaning of communion. Set aside bread and juice to partake of it by yourself, knowing that we are all united through Christ’s death on the cross as the passage says, “Is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.” (1 Cor 10:16-17)
